For Dorene Serbenski, founder of Desserts Unlimited, food was always a central element in her personal and professional life. As a young child, she learned cooking basics from her Grandmother Mamie Turk, one of the greatest cooks around. As a young adult, Dorene's baking skills were recognized when she won the title of "Cherry Pie Queen" in 1959. For years, Dorene was the one to bring a special dessert or sweet treat to the family reunion, birthday party or Sunday dinner. Saturday's she was always busy baking and decorating wedding cakes for special friends in her basement kitchen. Dorene worked in various food service positions for the Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, retiring from her position as Head baker after a decade of dedicated service.
In 1984, Dorene opened Desserts Unlimited, a pre-order bakery featuring custom cakes and desserts, located in a quaint two-story building next to her home. Here the business thrived and it soon grew to be a full-service caterer and bakery serving parties of 2 to 5,000.
With just a few full-time staff and lots of help from her family, the quaint little building was busting at the seams. To keep up with the growing demand, Dorene invited her new son-in-law, Dan Pelletier, to join her as a partner in the business. With Dan's energy and enthusiasm, Dorene knew she could handle the future growth with the same level of high quality and customer service that her patrons were accustomed. Although Dan grew up working in his mother's diner, he wanted formal culinary training so he earned his Associates Degree in Culinary Management from Grand Rapids Community College.
In 2002, Dorene and Dan opened the doors of a new state-of-the-art 5,800 square foot catering facility located just a few miles from home on Red Arrow Highway. While the business was started with a focus on desserts, the catering service has grown to be the premier provider in Southwest Michigan. In 2006 for marketing purposes, the name, Premier Catering, was added to the Desserts Unlimited logo to recognize the full range of products and services the business provides. Approaching her golden years, Dorene formally retired in spring 2007, leaving the business in the able hands of Dan with help from her nephew, Nick Harling, and the dedicated staff.
Today, we are proud to cater a myriad of events throughout Southwest Michigan, all from our state-of-the-art kitchen in Paw Paw, Michigan. Our delivery area extends west to Lake Michigan, south of the borders of Michigan and Indiana, east to Battle Creek and north to Grand Rapids.
